The NFL season is almost over. The unfortunate reality is that once the Super Bowl is played, there won’t be live NFL football until the 2019 preseason begins. That’s a long way away, but thankfully, free agency and the 2019 NFL Draft will be there to tide us over. The draft is going to be an extremely important one for the Redskins, as they may find themselves searching for a new franchise quarterback. With Alex Smith likely out for the 2019 season, the team is going to have to add depth at the position at the very least. And if they don’t trust Colt McCoy to be a starter, they may look to invest in the position early. Obviously, free agency will have an impact on what the Redskins do in the draft. But if they largely ignore the quarterback position during the process — which is expected given the potential high-cost of the available quarterbacks relative to what they’re already paying Smith — their first-round pick will certainly have a high level of intrigue surrounding it.
