The Dallas Cowboys were pretty darn crafty in their wheeling and dealing this spring. They looked at free agency with the usual disinterest but attacked the trade desk with fervor. Dallas traded Day three picks to acquire players like Stephon Gilmore and Brandin Cooks. That’s the NFL equivalent of a rabbit out of a hat. With Gilmore expected to take the CB2 role and Cooks expected to seize the WR2 role, the Dallas Cowboys have covered themselves ahead of the draft. With neither position a glaring need in 2023, Dallas has the ability to turn their attention to other positions. Feeling invincible after those highly successful trades, Jerry and Stephen Jones are willing to “get cute” in the first round and trade down to maximize their capital. Getting an extra top-100 pick gives them an extra chance at a starter (top-100 picks are expected to log significant roles, if not starting roles).
