The Athletic

The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine is next week, a time for players to make themselves money and for executives to fall in love with their guys. The Lions, equipped with five selections among the top 85 draft picks, will have options when it comes to this draft. For a team that expects to compete for the NFC North title, Detroit is in an envious position. This week, beat writers at The Athletic were asked to put together mock drafts ahead of the combine. I used Pro Football Focus’ mock draft simulator (with some guidance from Dane Brugler’s ranking of the top 100 prospects) to try to project some options for the Lions in the first three rounds. This version includes a first-round trade, help in the secondary and athleticism across the board. A lot will change between now and April, of course. Free agency will factor into these decisions, too. But at the end of the day, the Lions are well-positioned to add talent. Don’t lose sight of that.
