Aidan Hutchinson has been absolutely phenomenal this season, and to say it was a Heisman worthy season wouldn't be a terrible opinion (you won't get any argument from me). With all that being said, he isn't my number 1 prospect in this draft. He's number 2, and you can guess who number 1 is. And thats no fault to his own, I'll explain later. I do, however need to recognize that it is common consensus that Aidan is the current favorite to go 1st overall in this upcoming draft. This isn't my overall rankings, its what I believe would happen if the draft was tomorrow. And the Jaguars, who need a lot (and my god, I mean a lot) of help. They must pick up the #1 player on their board here, regardless of position.
Remember when I said Hutchinson was number 2 in my rankings and said I would explain who number 1 was later? Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Kayvon Thibodeaux, my number 1 prospect. With all due respect to Aidan Hutchinson, Kayvon has been doing this throughout his college career. He didn't need a breakout, he's just been that dude. Lions have the easiest pick of the night here, take whoever the Jags don't. Oh and also, this will be the last I talk about my personal prospect rankings for this mock. You can infer whatever you please from this
(Disclaimer: I just make the trades happen by whatever works. I don't mock what exactly is traded. Keep that in mind.) Houston needs so much help here, but also they could be aided here by acquiring more draft picks. They need OL help, and Evan Neal is the top guy on the board. But they gave up a lot of capital for Laremy Tunsil, and I don't see a team drafting a right tackle with the 3rd overall pick. Its also a disservice to Evan Neal, the most talented offensive tackle in this draft in my opinion. He is more than capable of being an NFL blindside tackle in the NFL. The Panthers need O Linemen badly, and with the Jets and Giants in front of them, they won't have their own pick of the crop. A trade here makes sense for both sides, and Evan Neal makes perfect sense for Carolina here.
So here's where I likely get the most of my criticism as like 90% of my followers are New York sports fans. I'm no Jet fan, but I know that outside of Bryce Hall (who needs to change his name to not share it with a entitled tiktoker), the Jets secondary has absolutely no (signed for 2022 and beyond) talent. Stingley is an immediate upgrade to this corp, and with Neal off the board, this should be a no brainer (this should be a no brainer even if Neal is on the board, in my opinion.)
Here where I declare my own bias. I am a New York Giants fan. Go ahead, get your laughs out now. I better not hear any Washington fans laughing too loud tho. Now, back to the picks. Outside of Andrew Thomas, this Offensive line has been atrocious. Calling them swiss cheese would be an insult to swiss cheese. Linderbaum has been one of, if not my sole, favorite o-line prospects in a while. I have no problem with the new Giants GM coming in and filling in a unit that hasn't seen consistent talent on the inside since Justin Pugh and Weston Richburg
The Texans are on the clock once again, and they will make a selection this time. They have to take the best available player here. (Yes I did say I wouldn't mention my rankings again, but here I am.) My best available is George Karlaftis, so the Texans (who have had a revolving door of defensive players this season) add some stability to the pass rush. Its almost like they could have used an elite pass rusher this season. If only they could have had one of those. Maybe one named Justin James Watt? Nah thats crazy talk, on to pick #7!
Oh? Did you think I was gonna let the Giants just have 2 top ten picks? Well, you don't know East Rutherford, my friend. Trading back for future picks worked last year for Big Blue, and I could very well see them doing it again. The Vikings absolutely could use offensive line help, as PFF didnt have a Vikings offensive tackle ranked inside the top 70. You read that number correct. Ekwonu can play anywhere on this O line. Him and Darrisaw can make a great young duo to protect Cousins, Mond, or whoever the Vikings signal caller is moving forward.
The Falcons seemed incredibly committed to Matt Ryan as their signal caller for next season. I could still see them taking a QB here, a la Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Jordan Love, etc. But they have a lot of defensive holes that they need to fill before before they even think about taking a former NFL MVP off the field. They specifically need to focus on the front 7, and seeing as Dante Fowler is a UFA this offseason, the priority needs to be EDGE and/or LB. The top 3 Edge rushers are off the board, so go with the LB1 in Georgia's own Nakobe Dean.
If you thought the top 10 was just gonna pass by without a quarterback being selected, you need to reevaluate yourself. This pick is being made under the assumption that Aaron Rodgers is not a Denver Bronco. (And this whole draft is under the assumption that if anyone employs Aaron, its Green Bay) (or the Pat McAfee Show) (cue the AJ Hawk chants, Bay Bay). Anyway, I got distracted, didn't I? Admittedly, the difference maker for this pick between Kenny and Matt Corral was the fact that Kenny Pickett is an inch taller than Matt Corral. So Denver, meet your new quarterback!
Jets fans are gonna scream at me that they need a number 1 receiver. Here's what I'll say. You have Elijah Moore and Corey Davis on a long term deal. Commit to one of them as your WR1. You need secondary help. Hamilton rounds out the top 10, and the (Fireman Ed voice) J, E, T, S JETS JETS JETS Secondary. (Did he come back? I remember he quit after the butt fumble or something.) (Full disclosure, My dad always called him Fireman Fred to make fun of him and I thought that was his actual name until a couple years ago, he really should consider a name change because that sounds much better.)
One of the easier picks for me to make here. The Washington... Commanders. (Right? Right. Right?) Whatever they are, they need a QB. FItz and Heineke aren't the answer. Corral has a credible case for best QB in college football this past year, so this should (it really should) be a no brainer. But lets be honest, they could absolutely be like you know what we really just need Spencer Rattler in this spot right here.
Hello Darkness my old friend. Oh, sorry. That was just me, greeting the team that I see in my nightmares. Well, one of them. (Hey Mets!) Anyway, James Bradberry is a cap cut casualty due to Giant GM incompetency *audible sigh*. So look for big blue to look to the secondary with this pick.
Myles Garrett right now is a one man front seven for Cleveland. They need all the help they can get rushing the passer, as they have 4 edge rusher who could leave as free agents this year. Ojabo gets lost in the noise that is Hutchinson, but he is still a great edge rusher and the right pick here.
Wow the Ravens lucked out, they need a franchise LT badly, and here it is. Charles Cross, welcome to Charm City.
Alright, let me get my one Eagles bias statement out of the way: Eagles, I hate you. I would rather take a WWE or AEW bodyslam on thumbtacks than see you win another championship, But I have to admit, the team is set up way too well for success moving forward. (If Howie doesn't mess this up.) So, I am here to certify, that I will not be biased in any of your 3 picks this round. So, lets get to it. Your first pick is on the interior offensive line. I identified that as your biggest area of need. Kenyon Green will fit in well on your line. So hopefully, Howie doesn't listen to me
From one side of the football, to the other. Darius Slay had an incredible year, but he won't be around forever. Philly could use some more help in the secondary, so Booth may very well be the fit here with pick #2
I wish I could mock you guys to not use a timeout to save your playoff hopes, but sadly I can't do that. I have no shame making that joke, since I have family from San Diego. And since the Chargers no longer play there, Dean deserves all the shade in the universe. Here's a defensive tackle that you desperately need, ya filthy animals. #FreeHerbert (Justin if you would have declared in 2019 you'd be a Giant rn, just saying. Not that that's better, it is not, but I'd enjoy it more)
The Saints really struggled on offense without Michael Thomas this year. I'm aware they could use a QB, but there's none talented enough to justify taking in this draft position outside of the ones off the board already. Griffin Wilson is a great fit here, and the only thought the Saints should have is if they should trade back or not. I say, they are unable to find a trade partner here. Which isn't a terrible thing for them.
I think they resign J.C Jackson. Which should be the #1 priority for Billy boy and the boys in New England. I still think they bolster the secondary with this pick, and take McDuffie here.
I'm very tempted to take something that they don't need, given that it is the Dolphins, and their GM has made questionable decisions in their drafts. But, must say, regardless of if I agree with the specific picks they have made, I think they know what positions they need to draft. I'm personally not a fan of Tua's game, but it doesnt take a genius to see his offensive line is putrid. Penning is the top lineman on the board (wait, I wasn't supposed to say that. Uh... uh... allegedly the top. Yeah that's good. They'll never know), and he is the easy pick.
I refuse to make a joke about this organization. They've been through so much this year, and still made the playoffs. Much respect to how this team has continued hustling, and fighting to make the playoffs. Devin Lloyd might be the safest pick here. Take him.
If it wasn't for Leal falling this would be a corner. Cards could use some D line help as well. Leal fits the bill.
Remember when I said the Falcons are committed to Matt Ryan. Well they are, but it doesnt hurt to trade up and get a 5th year option on his successor. This is a great spot for Willis, as he'll have at least a year to sit behind Matt Ryan and learn from one of the best of our (at least mine) generation.
